In my search for a secondhand Trak Shak I have found a 2000 model that doesn't have the boat loader /come roof rack. I would like to have one with this option.

So

My question is can it be retro fitted to the Trak Shak or is it one of those things that have to be ordered from new??

Cheers Kev

Kev,

I made my own. About $200 of steel and a weekend of cutting/welding. The locating pins and even one half of the catches are fitted to all TSs AFAIK. Not quite as fancy as the OEM version and no gas struts but does the job.

Not sure if we'll make the gathering due to looming commitments and even if we do it will be Liam and myself again so will only have the tent. I can post some photos if it helps.

Adrian,

If you don't make it to St George, we will possibly catch up again at the Pyrenees, hopefully to compare Trak Shaks LOL

I wouldn't say cheap as they hold their value very well, just that it is located in QLD and has all but the roof rack option.

They are still looking at around the $15K for it though, The boss has said yes I can buy a camper so I am pretty keen to get one before she changes her mind hehehe

It is also set up for 2 x 32L engels (my Favourite)

Only other issue is it has 6 stud Nissan rims so I will have to replace them with 6 stud 80 Series rims for reliability ;)

After yours and Adrian comments it is beginning to look promising

Another question.

The one I am looking at has the hydralic over ride brakes. I am not a fan of over rides and would prefer the elec brakes for ease of reversing down slopes etc.

What are your thoughts on this??

Kev,

You may find it has both. Ours and a few others I've seen are set up this way.

Here's a picture that shows the rack (and no, that's not the mother-in-law in the brown bag):

Adrian,

I have just found out that they come standard that way now.

How well do the 2 different braking systems work in this set up??

Kev,

There's a sleeve that you flip over the exposed part of the shaft on the over run brakes so they are disabled when driving and the electric brakes are used. Works very well. I use a Tekonsha Prodigy controller. I quess you could use the over run brakes if the vehicle didn't have a controller fitted but I haven't tried this.

I'll send you a MM with my contact details if you want to give me a call.

All the best

Adrian

Yet another question LOL

What are the Trak Shaks with solid axle and leaf/shockie combination like??

I know the coil/shock independent ones are pretty good for not shaking stuff apart but not sure about the soild axle ones??

Anyone have one of this type??

Kev,

Again, that's like ours. Never been a problem. Solid and simple. Tracks well on slow and fast dirt. The shocks aren't vertical but keep everything under control. We had a Cub Drifter (leaves/no shocks) and it would bounce around on the same roads.

An independat setup would theoretically better match the Pajero but it hasn'r been an issue.

If ours hadn't come with brand new AT tyres I would have changed the rims (and brake drums) from a 5 stud Toyota to 6 Pajero. Both 16" but different widths.

Regards,

Adrian

Thanks again Adrian,

I am very keen on this one now LOL

My 8x5' off road trailer has the independent leaf suspension with shock so I really like the independent system.

I suppose a heap of other campers are designed with a solid axle with leaf and shock so they must be pretty good.

Thanks again.

Cheers Kev
